We replace it with the entry two below in the picture (“Univers LT Std 55”) and the system is back up to speed. To fix this, we use “Text Search and Replace” within Finale to find "Univers LT Std 55 Roman” with an asterisk next to it, denoting that it is not present in the system. Finale named it something else and the system can't handle it. The reason for the slowdown is that the font doesn't actually exist. In other words, an action that should take a tenth of a second could now have the dreaded Macintosh beach ball spinning on screen for 30 seconds or more. The time it takes for almost any action within Finale is multiplied by a factor of about 300. When we select Roman, Finale slows down to an almost comical speed. As pictured, the only choice is 55 Roman. The option we’re looking for is Univers LT Std 55. When we need to swap out lyric fonts within Finale (say, if a file came from a composer or from another product line with other fonts), we change to Univers LT Std in Finale by selecting it from a list (attachment #1: "Univers 1 initial font selection.png"). Within Finale 2012, we have workarounds, but the way Finale sees the font and the way that the system sees the font do not agree. Univers LT Std has been a problem child in our Engraving Department for a very long time, but we have literally thousands of engravings that rely on the font for lyrics and expressions.
